H. Other CLS Issues

1.  Which operating systems can be used with CLS?
There are no known problems using CLS with any version of the Windows operating system, including Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server Edition.  CLS is also compatible with Novell Netware.2.  When running full-screen, the CLS screen size is too small (Windows 2000/NT/XP).

  1. Use your right mouse button to select the CLS shortcut.
  2. From the menu that appears, select Properties.
  3. On the Options tab, select Full-Screen or Window.
  4. On the Font tab, change the Font Size to 10 x 18.
  5. On the Layout tab, change the Screen Buffer Size and Window Size to 80 by 25 for full screen or 80 by 35 for window.

3.  I’m using Windows 2000/NT/XP, and I can’t get CLS to run in the full-screen mode.
First, make sure your CLS icon is set up correctly.  If you have purchased a new computer that uses Windows XP or 2000, follow the instructions in Chapter 2 of the CLS Getting Started Guide to create a new icon and set up the icon properties.  Pay special attention to settings on the Layout tab.

To edit the CLS icon properties:

  • Use your right mouse button to select the CLS shortcut.
  • From the menu that appears, select Properties.
  • On the Options tab, select Full-Screen or Window.
  • On the Font tab, change the Font Size to 10 x 18.
  • On the Layout tab, set the Screen Buffer Size and Window Size to 80 by 25.

If you upgraded to Windows XP from Windows 98 and you can’t find the Layout tab, you must delete the original CLS icon and create a new one.

4.  I’m using Windows 2000/XP, and CLS “locks up” when I try to run it in the full-screen mode.  CLS works fine if I run it in a Window.
This situation appears to be caused by a conflict with the computer’s video support.  It’s not a common problem with CLS, and it’s most often seen with clones built by a local vendor.

If you have this problem, make sure that your computer is not using the video support built into the motherboard.  Install a decent (but inexpensive) video card in the PC, making sure that the motherboard’s video support has been disabled.  To avoid driver conflicts, be sure to remove any unused drivers.

5.  If you double-click on the CLS icon, it takes you back to the Windows desktop.
This problem may have several possible causes:

  1. Your CLS icon may be pointing to the wrong location.  Refer to Chapter 2 of the CLS Getting Started Guide for the correct way to set up a CLS icon.
  1. If you are running CLS ~ Limited Edition, CLS ~ General Ledger or CLS ~ CheckWriter, the CLS software may be damaged and have to be reinstalled.
  1. Although rare, Windows will occasionally lose the ability to run an MS-DOS program.  This may be caused by a virus, or by damage to the Windows Registry.  To solve this problem, Windows itself may have to be reinstalled.

6.  CLS is running too slow.
  1. Your CLS data directory may contain too many files. If you create a new directory for the data and move a few ledgers to the new directory, the speed of CLS should increase. If it does, you can move additional ledgers to the new data directory.
  1. If you are using Windows XP workstations with the ledger data files on a Novell or Windows 2000 server, make sure you’ve installed all of the available service packs/updates.  A bug in an early version of Windows XP caused CLS (and other database programs) to run very slowly.
  1. If you are using a Novell server, make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest Client32 updates (see above).

7.  Where can I find the CLS documentation?
Complete on-line CLS documentation is provided in the form of Adobe PDF (portable document format) files.  It can be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4 or later.

The CLS on-line documentation is automatically copied to your hard disk when you install CLS.  To access the on-line documentation, or to install Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free copy is included on the CLS CD-ROM), refer to Chapter 2 of the CLS Getting Started Guide.
